Here is my most recent Ten Paces and Draw collaboration. My sketch is the top right corner, my final is the bottom left corner. I really like what Lillian Duermeier did with my sketch! Also, seeing someone else draw a character I created is super fun! My little Pizza Princess seems almost real.

I haven’t watched a lot of Venture Bros, but I am familiar enough with the characters that this wasn’t a real struggle to draw. I wanted the text to reflect the sound of Dr. Girlfriend’s voice.

Here is a REALLY really rough sketch for my next Ten Paces and Draw swap. I am so annoyed with the computer lately, my tablet, and adobe. I could just scream!

It’s a fan art swap including any fan stuff you want to draw. I decided to draw Donny trying to eat Pizza Princess (my creation) and having Jake behind, getting ready to stop Donny

your work is amazing. i love how it makes me feel. i cant describe it, i just know i love your art. my question for you is: wht was the first real job you had as an artist? did you get your start as an intern, were you discovered? or was it through connections you made? i need to know! I am trying to think of my first real art job… I can’t remember! All during my schooling I would make work for friends, for their bands, for my band, for friend’s venues, and for art galleries. Sometimes it paid, sometimes it didn’t. Some work was good, and some were failures. I was just constantly wanting to explore and expand my skills and always had myself buried in projects. I did a few internships and got some experiences with that. I would say the biggest project I have ever worked on was during an internship where I made character designs for animations voiced/written by Saturday Night Live cast members. One even played during SNL! So weird. Those internships didn’t really give me any long lasting contacts, but they did give me experiences about how to work in an office—things like conference calls, mood boards, lots of emailing, etc.

I would say the biggest thing is: always keep yourself busy. Always have fun. Make your own projects if they aren’t coming your way, because when you are doing your own thing, and if it is good, people will find out about it and be drawn to you. They will start to notice. I am lucky in that I live in a city that is super supportive of me and I get quite a few jobs that way, but I also have a large number of friends online in the art world that have given me advice, given me contacts, etc.

I currently have an art job as an in-house designer/illustrator for Whole Foods. It is a little bit different than what I normally do, but still fun and still a great job to learn and expand my skills.

Also, my first all graphite piece in ages and DAMN do I love it. Going to continue my work in this direction for a while.

Recently just worked on another swap for Ten Paces and Draw (see all of them here). The sketch I sent in is the bottom right, and my final is the top left TMNT final.

I feel like this particular swap was extra interesting and successful is how each artist interpreted the other’s sketch. I really love how Bree Lundberg turned my dancing house into a really adorable birdhouse, with the tree mimicking my heart balloons. So smart.

The sketch I received was from Kate Haberer. It’s a really funny mole-man guy knitting something with his pet alligator. I couldn’t come up with a good mole-man like hers and was super stumped. I really loved the pipes and idea of being in a sewer and I instantly thought of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and decided to change up her sketch.

This Saturday was the opening at Gallery 1988 Melrose for the show, “Young Adult”. I met Kat Brunnegraff and Liz and Jeremy Reed of Cuddles and Rage. I got to see Garfunkle and Oats, a hundred adorable LA girls dressed in cute clothes, and briefly say hello to Sophia Rossi, 1/3 founder of Hellogiggles.com Unfortunately, I was super super sick all weekend (and still am!) So I wasn’t as adventurous as I wished. Another time, and place. It was nice going somewhere literally 70 degrees warmer than what I have been dealing with here in Idaho.

Finally done with this beast. My eyes and my wrist hurts. For some reason I had the absolute hardest time deciding on what colors I wanted this gig poster to be. It will be screen printed and for sale at the show.
